What Is A Concealed Zipper Foot? Let’s Find Out!

What Is A Zipper Foot That Isn’t Visible?

Zippers are a part of life. They are used everywhere, from clothing to shoes to bags.

However, there are times when zippers aren’t visible.

There are two types of invisible zippers – the ones that are hidden inside the fabric and the ones that are hidden under the surface of the fabric.

Invisible zippers are usually found on bags, jackets, coats, and other accessories.

They are also used in shoes and boots.

How does a concealed zipper foot work?

A concealed zipper foot is designed for sewing with an invisible zipper application.

It has a special opening at the top so you can see through it while stitching.

This allows you to sew along the edge of your garment or accessory without having to remove the needle from its hole.

The opening is large enough to accommodate most standard needles.

The best thing about this type of foot is that it doesn’t require any additional tools.

You don’t need anything else but your regular sewing machine.

It works by using a specially-designed presser foot which creates a space between the material being sewn and the needle.

When you stitch over the seam edges line, the pressure created pushes the material away from the needle.

As a result, the thread goes into the gap instead of getting caught up around the needle.

This makes it easy to keep track of where you are going as well as how much thread you have left.

You will find many different brands available online. However, if you want something more durable, then you should go for one made out of metal.

These feet come in various sizes and shapes. Some even include extra features like adjustable tension control and automatic reverse function.

How to Sew the Invisible Zipper Foot?

Sewing an invisible zipper foot is a skill that every sewist should master.

It’s a simple technique that allows you to create professional looking zippers without having to use a special machine.

If you’re new to sewing, you might think that using a regular sewing machine is enough to get the job done.

However, there are a few things that you need to know before you start sewing.

You can use any sewing machine with an open throat or you can make one yourself using this tutorial.

You will need:

  • a piece of cardboard
  • scissors
  • sewing needle
  • thread

Follow the steps:

Step 1 – Cut Out Your Invisble Zip Foot

Cut out a small rectangle for each side of your zip foot. The size should be about 2 inches wide by 3/4 inch tall.

Step 2 – Attach It To Your Machine

Attach it to your sewing machine so that the opening faces down towards the bed plate.

Make sure that the edge of the zipper position foot is facing up. This way, as you sew through the material, the zipper pulls into place.

Step 3 – Start Sewing Through Fabric With Invisible Zipper Foot

Sew around the perimeter of the fabric until all four sides have been sewn together.

Then start stitching along the center and mark the seam line.

When you reach the end of the zipper pull, stop sewing and backstitch at the beginning of the uneven zipper pull.

Step 4 – Finish Stitching Around Center Seam Line

Continue stitching around the entire length of the zipper foot. Once finished, remove the thread from the underside of the fabric.

Step 5 – Remove Thread From Underneath Fabric

Pull off the thread from underneath the fabric. If necessary, trim away excess threads.

Step 6 – Test Fit & Adjust As Needed

Once everything has been stitched, test fit the garment. Check if the zipper fits properly. If not, adjust accordingly.

How do you use double welting feet?

Double welt feet allow you to add decorative welts on both sides of the fabric when making garments.

They also help prevent fraying and unraveling during washing.

The most common type of double welted foot is called a “double-welt” foot because it includes two sets of needles and two rows of zipper teeth.

There are three basic types of double welt feet: straight, curved, and staggered. Each style works best for different fabrics.

  • Straight Double Welt Feet

This kind of foot comes with two fixed rows of needles and two fixed rows of zipper teeth.

You simply set them according to which row you wish to stitch first.

  • Curved Double Welt Feet

With these kinds of feet, you’ll find two rows of needles and two rows teeth. But instead of being fixed, they move independently.

  • Staggered Double Welt Feet

These feet come in pairs; one pair consists of two rows of needles while the other pair contains two rows of teeth.

These feet work well for wovens like denim and canvas.

Useful Tips For Using Double Welt Feet

To avoid damage to your sewing machine’s bobbin case, always keep the spool of thread separate from the main supply.

Always check the tension settings prior to starting a project. Make adjustments as needed.

 Conclusion:

Although hidden zipper closure has been a classic feature in footwear for years, it is still a novelty for some. The zipper closure is still a fun and stylish detail, though.
